This means you’ll be able to use up the entire product’s contents even if you bought it some time ago. The best-before date can be found on the product’s underside but mainly serves as a guideline since, in our experience, the product lasts much longer.

But what does it mean the symbol of an open jar of sunscreen ?

The number inside the jar reflects how long to continue using the product when someone opens it. For example, ‘12M’ means it should be used within 12 months of being opened. It’s crucial not to ignore the symbol as after the expiry date ends, the active ingredients in the product begin to decompose and can become ineffective at warding off UVA and UVB rays. This means you’re at risk for sunburn, premature ageing, skin damage, and skin cancer — all the issues that come along with too much sun exposure. The longer sunscreen sits around and the more you open it, shut it, and take it on all your adventures, the more chance it is for bacteria to grow. Bacteria isn’t good for anyone’s skin and can cause irritation or a breakout. But if you have sensitive skin, you must be extra careful with what you put on it. You’ll want to think twice before slathering on questionable sunscreen.
