In July 2024, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) published a deeply flawed report, falsely claiming that EVY Technology’s Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50 only offered SPF 15. This irresponsible announcement inflicted significant reputational damage, disrupted market competition, and misled consumers and professionals. While we welcome external control, it has to be done using the correct methods. SPF mousses are very rare, and most labs are not experienced in testing mousse. However, the mousse must be handled according to official ISO standard protocols. Yet today, Mattilsynet does not accept that their chosen lab is not allowed to interpret the test method as they wish while claiming to follow international standards. Communication with Mattilsynet has been extremely slow, and they have only answered some of our questions or not at all. Several points were also clearly non-objective and matter of opinion that has dragged this on.
Due to the unjustified and incorrect actions of the Norwegian agency—and to yet again confirm our superior quality—we conducted DIRECTLY new independent ISO tests on all our products. We passed 100% of the tests, just as before.
Results from TWO different Independent SPF ISO Accredited Labs, EVY SPF50. (July 2024 – Jan 2025)
What Went Wrong
Zero Transparency in Testing • Mattilsynet failed to disclose how many units were tested nor how they were handled. • Testing was done in an Australian lab, far from the point of sale, with no clarity on transport integrity. • No adherence to internationally accepted SPF testing methods (ISO 24444:2019) was documented.
Scientific Incompetence • EVY’s mousse was wrongly tested using lotion/cream protocols. • While trying to degas the mousse, the lab destroyed its structure and properties before testing. • They ignored the correct ISO method for mousse/foam sunscreens.
False Accreditation • Mattilsynet falsely implied testing met EU-recognized standards. • Why outsource to a non-EEA lab when fully accredited European labs are available?
Legal Overreach & Misuse of Authority • A single inaccurate test from Mattilsynet was generalized to all EVY SPF 50 while only one bottle was tested. Mattilsynet did not accept tests from actual batches showing mistakes in their method. • Neither Mattilsynet nor the Swedish Health and Food Organisation put a “stop sale” on our SPF 50. • Premature public announcements caused unnecessary alarm and damaged trust. • These actions violated core EU principles: transparency, proportionality, and due process.
Reality Check from the Experts When we interviewed other labs in Europe from the same network, one official replied that they no longer collaborate with the Australian lab used by Mattilsynet due to inconsistent results. They stated clearly that the lab in question is no longer recognized by their own European network.
Moreover, when consulting ISO specialists and members of the technical committee for SPF testing standards, they confirmed that Mattilsynet’s methods were incorrect and not aligned with ISO 24444:2019. In other words, they were invalid. The Mattilsynet lab used Method A instead of Method D, followed by B. This is the wrong method according to the SPF-ISO standards and automatically invalidates Mattilsynet’s results.
“I understand that the testing procedure for mousse that is described in ISO 24444 requires testing according to method D followed by method B in order to follow the standard (se below).“
EVY’s Triple-Layer Quality Net
To ensure our sunscreens meet the highest standards:
We test each formula internally.
We validate results in a second independent external ISO-acredited lab.
Then we confirm again via a third independent external ISO-accredited lab.
In order to further control the formula, we do the following extra tests: • We run an 8-hour dry SPF test with results well above SPF 50 even after 8 hours. • We also performed the ISO water resistance test, and the formula passed as “Very water resistant”. • Sweat, Salt Water, Chlorinated Water, Microbioma, comedogenicity, allergy, … Tests are also performed in independent labs with extremely good results.
We still urge all users to follow the application guidelines and reapply every second hour!
EVY’s Legal Counterattack We’ve taken action via our legal representatives, Ramberg Advokater: ✅ Submitted again a formal objections to Mattilsynet’s misleading report. ✅ Shared new, third-party test results confirming ISO compliance. ✅ Requested official clarification to restore public confidence and fair market access.
What You Need to Know ✅ EVY sunscreens are fully compliant with EU regulations. ✅ The Norwegian report is based on unscientific and flawed data. ✅ Our SPF claims are independently tested, verified, and consistent. ✅ You can safely be assured of EVY’s quality, safety, and innovation.
